When we launched TwentyEagle, we wanted to make it a place to promote commentary about the civil cases heard by the New York Court of Appeals. One of the main ways we wanted to do that was by hosting virtual symposiums. We hoped they would provide folks an opportunity to comment on the Court’s cases, be it to raise an issue on which the parties hadn’t focused, to discuss the real-world impact that the Court’s decision could have, or to air just about anything. Sure, a person could do that by filing an amicus brief with the Court. But that’s not an option for a lot of people, and we wanted to foster discussion without the barriers to entry that come with amicus participation.
So we’re very excited to announce our first two symposiums. TwentyEagle will host virtual symposiums on (i) Aybar v. Ford Motor Company, which is about whether an out-of-state corporation consents to general personal jurisdiction in New York by appointing an in-state agent for the receipt of service of process; and (ii) White v. Cuomo, which is about whether legalized online fantasy sports betting violates the state constitution.
We welcome submissions on any topic related to either Aybar or White, and will publish anything we receive that complies with our submission guidelines (basically, that submissions have to be no more than 1500 words). We’ll publish your posts in advance of oral argument at the Court.
The deadline for submissions for these symposiums is January 4, 2021.
We can’t wait to hear what you have to say!
P.S. We’ll be hosting more symposiums in the future. If you have suggestions on cases you think would merit a symposium, send us an email at twentyeagle@twentyeagle.com.
